CINCINNATI, OHIO (FOX19) - A local man says he is on a mission to try and raise $1 million to help fight cancer.
29-year-old Jeremy K. Smith, of Authentic New Media, says he has joined a national 10-week competition hosted by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), to become the Cincinnati LLS Man of the Year. Smith says his goal for 2011 is to raise $1 Million, by June 8 to win the award and help give back to an important charity.
"Helping this organization is very important to me for many reasons," Smith said. "My family has battled cancer for generations, and being a part of this fundraiser is my way of honoring my loved ones and making a positive change in the world."
The LLS Man & Woman of the Year competition begins April 1 and ends June 8. According to the LLS, proceeds raised will be used for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma research, and improving the quality of life for patients and their families.
Smith says he will compete in honor of Cincinnati's Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Boy & Girl of the Year: Annie Coyle a lymphoma survivor, and Aiden Gage Bordwine a leukemia survivor. "The children I am sponsoring, Annie and Aiden, are both cancer survivors," says Smith. "Annie and Aiden are success stories, but there are still others battling these diseases. We still need additional targeted therapies for all types of blood cancer."
LLS competition guidelines candidates must be: philanthropic, ambitious, competitive, and have a strong connection to the community, business and community leaders. Smith is one of 10 candidates competing for this title in Cincinnati.
Smith is currently seeking volunteers and donations. April 1 – June 8 Smith will host a series of community fundraising and networking events in Cincinnati.
