FAYETTEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA (FayObserver.com) - Robeson County residents will be able to benefit from a mobile food pantry scheduled to begin operating March 29.

The pantry is a distribution truck that the Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeastern North Carolina purchased with grant money from Feeding America, a national hunger-relief charity, according to a news release.

While Robeson County is the targeted area for the mobile distribution point, food bank officials also hope to use the truck in areas of Cumberland and Hoke counties, according to the organization's news release.

"There's a definite need for this type of thing," Operations Manager Gideon Adams said in the release.

The truck is designed to streamline the loading and unloading process by eliminating the need for heavy equipment used in the past, the release said.

The truck has separate storage areas for dry goods and frozen and fresh foods.

That will allow the food bank to deliver fresh produce, something that has been difficult to do until now, Adams said.

"Previously, we could not give out as much fresh food because our member agencies did not have the means to store it," he said in the release.

Fresh goods can now be delivered directly to those in need, eliminating the need for storage, he said.

The first distribution with the truck will at the Robeson Church and Community Center at 600 W. Fifth St. in Lumberton.
