LAS ANIMAS, COLORADO (Bent County Democrat) - More than 40 dogs, mostly small breeds (Chihuahua, dachshund, terrier, papillon and Pekinese mixes), were removed from a private residence in Bent County Wednesday. In response to animal cruelty complaints, the Bent County Sheriff’s department and Colorado Humane Society & SPCA investigators found that these dogs were living in unsanitary conditions with inadequate shelter.

After discussing the condition of the animals with the owner and the care required by state law, the owner surrendered the dogs to the Colorado Humane Society, and the Bent County Sheriff’s department is considering whether to charge the owner with animal neglect. Several additional dogs – that were not relinquished by the owner – remain on the property.

Living conditions will be monitored by local law enforcement and Colorado Humane investigators.

“The owner was very cooperative and made the best decision for these dogs by allowing us to remove them from a potentially life-threatening situation,” said Duane Adams, Associate Director for the Colorado Humane Society & SPCA.

“The help from the Colorado Humane Society was invaluable in this investigation,” said Tandy Hasser, undersheriff of Bent County. “I appreciate their knowledge and expertise. Many animals will have a safe and dry place to sleep tonight because of this partnership.”

The 42 dogs relinquished dogs were brought to a Denver animal shelter where they may be made available for adoption.
