MANILA , PHILIPPINES (Inquirer.net) - ING Bank in Manila hit its target of raising P1.8 million from a one-day running event to benefit more homeless families displaced by Typhoon “Ondoy” who used to be informal settlers along the Pasig River.

Dubbed “Running 20,” in celebration of ING Bank’s 20th year in the country, the event held on December 11 at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig drew more than 2,000 participants, including officers, employees and clients of ING Bank. The registration fees of P500 and P1,000, plus the funds raised from 21 sponsors and patrons, will go toward the construction of an additional 20 homes in the 2nd ING Village in Calauan, Laguna, ING said in a press statement.

Consuelo D. Garcia, ING Bank country manager, turned over the P1.8-million cash donation to Fernando Zobel de Ayala, chair of Ayala Land, Inc. and Habitat for Humanity Philippines, and Ricardo Nicanor Jacinto, managing director and CEO of Habitat.

Zobel, himself an accomplished marathon runner and triathlete, also participated in the 20km event while Jacinto and his family participated in the 3km and 5km events.

ING Bank earlier donated P2.15 million to Habitat for the construction of an initial 23 houses. The 2nd ING Village will eventually house 100 families and is part of Habitat for Humanity’s BayaniJuan sa Calauan project.

Aside from helping ING Bank and Habitat for Humanity build more homes, participating runners also got to win cash prizes and a chance to go to next year’s ING-NYC Marathon, which was the grand raffle prize in the 20km category.

Colonel Paul Santos, 53, who has been with the Armed Forces of the Philippines for 33 years, clinched the guaranteed slot in the 2011 ING-New York City Marathon.
