Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

PAYSON, ARIZONA (Payson Roundup) - Here at the Humane Society of Central Arizona we call ourselves a shelter — “The Little Shelter that Could.”

We are also an impound facility that holds animals for the town and county. The law requires we hold animals for a period of 72 hours to allow the owners time to reclaim them.

But we really don’t like to be called a pound. We are a shelter, a rescue. We believe in most of the animals that come through our front gates. We believe that, with enough time and TLC, they can find a loving home and family who will give them a chance at life.

There are many different kinds of rescue organizations in this country. One of the most famous is Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. They are able to rescue animals of all kinds, and they have a donor base that spans the world.

Most rescues are either breed or species specific. There is a rescue organization associated with most “purebred” cats and dogs. But they are unwilling to accept an animal that is not “pure.” The reason for this is that, most often, they operate out of foster homes and don’t actually have a facility.

In addition, many people are willing to pay top dollar for a particular breed of animal, and will even travel long distances to pick them up. Many people will buy a purebred animal with the intent to breed it for profit.

There are many responsible breeders who love and devote their lives to their animals. They tend to all the needs and responsibilities associated with being a breeder.

It is very expensive to responsibly sell animals. It requires health checks and inoculations, not to mention many hours of time. Many breeders even have some of their animals spayed and neutered to be sure that the buyer is not going to use them as breeders.

Sadly, there is a flip side to that coin, and that is the side we most often see here at HSCAZ. The purebred animals that find their way to our front door are often the ones someone intended to use for a profit — to “breed for greed” — then, for one reason or another, decide to give the animals up or just lose them.

When a true purebred dog or cat comes into our shelter, we will often try to connect with a breed-specific rescue group. But, most often, these animals are “just this side of pure” — the offspring that result when an irresponsible person allows their purebred animal to mate with another breed. Therefore, the mixed breed animals have no place to go when they are cast off, except for shelters like ours.

This week’s Adoption Options column features a few of these animals. We hope you can find a place in your heart and home to give them another chance at happiness.

If you’d like to learn more about these or any of the many other animals we have come and see us at 812 S. McLane Road or give us a call at (928) 474-5590, or you can view many of our animals online at our Web site: www.humanesocietycentralaz.org.

KIBBLES

Kibbles is a 4-year-old Bassett Hound mix. She was brought in with her best friend, Little Bit. Their owner died, and a kind neighbor brought them in to us. We don’t know much about them, but we do know that they would benefit from being adopted together. It’s not a must, but we encourage it, since they have been through so much together. Kibbles is very sweet. She walks great on a leash, is housebroken and loves to play. She knows basic commands and is ready to find her forever home, preferably with Little Bit.

LITTLE BIT

Little Bit is a 2-year-old Beagle mix. She was brought in with her best friend, Kibbles. Their owner died and a neighbor brought them to us, with very little information. She is very well mannered and super sweet. She is easy going and would love to be adopted with Kibbles. She is housebroken, leash trained and knows basic commands. She and Kibbles would like to be adopted together.

ABBY

Abby is a 1-year-old Irish Wolfhound/ Blackmouth Cur mix. She has been adopted and returned twice because she didn’t fit the role of outside dog or therapy dog. She is housebroken and leash trained and obeys commands very well. She has so many positive qualities, like the fact that she loves children and is very friendly with cats and other dogs. Please give Abby a chance. This time she needs to be adopted into her forever home.

SYDNEY

Sydney is a 3-1/2-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever mix. She was originally on humanitarian hold, but unfortunately her family was not able to come back for her. Lucky for her, she has so many great personality traits we’re sure she’ll be adopted soon. She gets along with all the dogs and loves to play. She loves the water as much as she loves to play fetch! She walks like a lady on the leash and rides well in the car. She has been around children her entire life and would make a wonderful addition to someone’s family, hopefully an active family.

CINNAMON

Cinnamon is a 15-month-old Golden Retriever mix. She was turned over by her owner because she could no longer afford to care for her. Cinnamon is very sweet and playful. She gets along great with other dogs and loves children. She can be shy at times, but she really comes around once she feels comfortable. She would do great with an active family that goes hiking and to the river, especially since she loves the water.
