CHENNAI, INDIA (Express Buzz) - Rotary International’s Statewide ‘Be Positive’ blood donation drive was flagged off from Ethiraj College here by Labour Minister T M Anbarasan on Thursday.

Around 15,000 students donated blood from across various parts of the State. The drive was aimed at motivating members of the younger generation to become blood donors in the safest possible way. Initiated by the Rotary District 3230, the drive was supported by five other Rotary districts.

The Minister praised the good work done by the Rotary International in the field of polio eradication and all other rural initiatives. K S Sripathi, chief information commissioner, said,

“This is a good initiative undertaken by the Rotary movement.

We have 5.5 million units of blood available in the country of which there is a shortage of 2.5 million units.

This kind of initiative is a good way to balance the deficit and also create awareness among people to come forward to donate blood, akin to a duty to society.” Rtn Dr R Sriram, chairman of blood and organ donation said, “We hope this drive will promote voluntary blood donation among all the students and the general public.”
