Helena Food Share

HELENA, MONTANA (Helena Independent Record) - Eight thousand pounds of tomatoes. Imagine that stack oí red smackers! Itís no misprint, and itís no scene from a killer-thriller movie.

Itís exactly how many tomatoes Dennis Flynn, owner of Valley Farms, donates each year to Helena Food Share.

Flynn will be honored Thursday at the Business/Community Services luncheon as the Kay McKenna Community Services Award recipient for this and other volunteer work with numerous nonprofit groups in the Capital City.

While Flynnís other contributions are noteworthy, itís his herbaceous giving that, this time of year, resonates with this editorial board. While other gardeners might not have the acreage or mass quantity of product as Valley Farms, you, too, can contribute unused items from your garden to Food Share.

Folks might not think of spring or summer as needy times for Food Share, but in reality, itís a time when shelves often run bare.

Given itís the time of year when many people are planting gardens, a little foresight can go a long way to help Food Share provide fresh vegetables to its recipients.

As you plan and layout your garden, whether itís in your backyard or a tract at a community plot, keep Food Share in mind. Throw in a couple extra rows of seeds of tomatoes, green beans, peppers, corn, carrots or radishes.

Itís an amazing and cheap way for our own community to help sustain those in need with fresh local produce. Give íem a taste of your own Farmers Market.

As a community, letís see if we can collectively give Flynn a run for his money.
