TALLAHASSEE , FLORIDA (WCTV) - A PETA tour came through Tallahassee Thursday to encourage people to not eat meat, and to talk about the consequences of cheap chicken or pork products.
One PETA representative wore a pig costume with a protective mask to illustrate diseases that may spread through factory farms.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that 30 to 50 percent of commercially raised pigs in the U-S have been infected with some strain of swine flu. PETA handed out masks and vegan beginner guides.
Virginia Fort, a PETA campaigner says, "In addition to protecting people from infection, PETA's masks send a lifesaving message that factory farms are a breeding for disease."
PETA officials also say that factory farms create the perfect storm for disease outbreaks.
They says it causes animals' weak immunity, which results from stress, close confinement, and indiscriminate use of antibiotics, is firmly linked to the development of dangerous microorganisms.
