Huntington County Habitat for Humanity
HUNTINGTON, INDIANA (Huntington Country TAB) - Huntington County Habitat for Humanity's latest project is a home that will rise, quite literally, from the ashes.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the home, held on July 31, took place on a swath of green grass at 66 Green Hill Court where the structure will be located.
Just a couple of years ago, a house was located on that same lot, home to a young family.
But on Nov. 17, 2010, that home was destroyed by fire. Its occupants, Zach and Alisha Kindler and their children, eventually moved on to a new home. But they say the support they received from the community immediately after the fire inspired them to make a gift of the ground to Habitat for Humanity.
"So many people helped," says Zach Kindler, a Huntington firefighter.
"We had felt so humbled by the amount of support, the amount of love, the amount of care," Alisha Kindler says.
Because of the blessings they received, they say, they decided to make a gift of the ground in order to pay that support forward to someone else.
Once the structure is completed, it will become home to Melissa Upton and Ashley Upton, who will each put in 250 hours of "sweat equity." They will pay a 20-year mortgage with no interest.
Anyone interested in participating in the build should contact Habitat for Humanity at 356-7425.
