BAY CITY, MICHIGAN (The Ann Arbor News) - About 100 "jailbirds" in Bay City spent Thursday locked up at the Pere Marquette Depot, calling family and friends in hopes of raising the $1,600 they needed to make bail — in the name of charity.
Participants in the Muscular Dystrophy Association Lock-Up were arrested for the crime of “having a big heart,” said Christi Bishop, executive director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
All donations went to the association to fund research, services and education in the Bay City-area for those with muscular dystrophy, Bishop said.
The group hoped to raise $46,000 through the event.
“We had about $22,000 going into yesterday,” Bishop said.
Many jailbirds were “repeat offenders” who had participated in past years. Others were referred by previous participants. People giving referrals had the opportunity to enter the “witness protection program” if they did not want people to know they had made the referral.
“Bay City has always been very supportive,” Bishop said. “This is meant to be a fun event, and we’re grateful to be able to come back every year.”
Bishop said the top fundraiser Thursday brought in $1,650 in donations. Another received an offer to match the $413 she already had raised.
“Everyone was very generous,” she said.
Not all of the jailbirds made their $1,600 bail. Bishop said they usually average about $500 each, but the organization sets the bar high.
The $1,600 covers the cost of sending two children to a weeklong MDA summer camp, Bishop said.
