MERTON, U K (Your Local Guardian) - Secondary school pupils have raised £21,066 to transform lives around the world.

Every year St Philomena’s Catholic High School for Girls in Carshalton raises money for different charities chosen by each house group.

They include The Children’s Trust in Tadworth, homeless charity Cardinal Hume Centre and child disability charity HCPT the Pilgrimage Trust.

As part of the fundraising Year 13 students raised £2,849 for international charity Camfed which provides young African women with better futures.

Headteacher, Maria Noone, said: “This is a fantastic achievement and I know the charities are extremely thankful for all our efforts.

“The students have worked extremely hard to raise a tremendous amount for a number of worthy causes and are shaping themselves into true leaders of the future.

“The group of girls who played a significant part in helping Camfed move one step closer towards its goals should be extremely proud of their achievements.”

The donation will help provide schooling for up to 20 girls in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Helena Grimmer a Year 13 student said: “As a year group, we really wanted to leave a legacy which could make a difference.

"Giving twenty girls access to education is a great honour and something we all view as a huge privilege.”
