RIPON, U K (Ripon Today) - Disabled children in India will be able to enjoy new-found mobility thanks to the efforts of North Yorkshire students.

A summer fete was staged at Northallerton College to mark the end of term and raise hundreds of pounds for the Ayries Trust.

The charity works tirelessly in Tamil Nadu, India, with some of the most impoverished people in the world.

The students are aiming to raise more than £500 which will buy specialist wheelchairs, made by local people and tailored to the needs of disabled children in the region.

The afternoon of fun included live music, all manner of food and jewellery stalls, school sports, sumo wrestling, boxing, a bouncy castle, the wet sponge stocks and a barbeque.

Organisers Amy Clarkson and Dominique Triggs said the event was designed to raise as much money as possible for a good cause and for the students to have fun.

“It was a steep learning curve organising it but very rewarding given that it seemed to be a great success,” said Dominque, 17, of Northallerton, who wants to work in the charitable sector one day.

“It has been a fantastic experience for us organising the event and we have had some great support from staff and students.”

Amy, 17, of Romanby, added: “We are hoping to raise more than £500 which will be enough to buy several wheelchairs for children to make a real difference to their lives.”
