March of Dimes

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA (WCTV) - Premature births are a major problem in Florida. Of the nearly four thousand babies born each week in the state, about six hundred of them are born prematurely.

That's why the March of Dimes partnered with fourteen men Saturday 7-28-12 as part of its 'Man in Labor Baby Shower' to raise awareness on the problem.

The men wore hospital gowns and carried baby bumps. Each one will endure an 11-week pregnancy.

The men are hoping to raise about $14,000 dollars. The money will go towards research to fight premature births.

"I've been blessed with three healthy, beautiful little girls and I want that for all my patients and so it's a good organization to help meet that goal," says Dr. Chris Sundstrom.

"This is a good feeling to come out and try and help a great cause, raise money for babies, premature babies, it's a great feeling," says DJ Dap, radio personality.

The March of Dimes attributes lower income and less access to educational and medical resources as some of the reasons for Florida's high premature birth rate.
