NORTH MANKATO, MINNESOTA (KEYC TV) - When on a tight budget one thing often falls by the wayside, dentist visits. Next month people from the state and surrounding areas will get the chance to have free dental work.
It's called Mission of Mercy.
A smile is defined as a facial expression indicating pleasure, favor or amusement with the upturning corners of your mouth. I find it hard not smile most of the time but for some people smiling isn't easy due to issues in their mouth.
Dr. Doug Otopalik says, "This kind of struggle goes on right around here in Mankato and the region. A lot of dental diseases are brewing for a long time."
Dr. Doug Otopalik says many people avoid getting the dental care they need because of the cost. Seeing a dentist might not be in everyone's budget and that's why he and over 1,000 volunteers are putting on the first ever Mission of Mercy.
The Minnesota Dental Association is putting on the event in Mankato. Providing 1 million dollars in free dental care for an expected 2,000 people.
Volunteer dentists and staffers will do everything from teeth cleanings to root canals.
Otopalik says, "This is not just a couple of dentists coming in. It's something that's really impacting Mankato and the region and the state and outside the state as well."
Since Mission of Mercy operates as a first come first serve event people often wait in line for hours just to be seen.
Dr. Otopalik says while he expects hundreds of people to show up for the free dental care there has been hundreds more offering to help, including the Verizon Wireless Center donating their arena to host the event.
Otopalik says, "The goal was to raise $225,000 of monies and in kind donations to bring this event to Mankato. At this point we've raised over $315,000."
They hope the extra money can help turn this into a something they put on ever year
Mission of Mercy event will be august 17 and 18 and hopefully after that you'll be seeing a whole lot more smiles around town.
Mission of Mercy is still looking for volunteers to help escort patients in and setup and tear down the event. If you would like to volunteer visit this link...
