SHERMAN, TEXAS (Sherman Denison Herald Democrat) - The Grayson County office of Big Brothers Big Sisters raised $21,800 during its annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake event Saturday.
Bowl For Kids’ Sake is the signature fundraiser of BBBS and was held at Lone Star Lanes in Sherman this year. Nearly 250 people participated in the event as part of 40 teams that took part in two sessions of bowling. The money raised at Saturday’s event accounts for 60 percent of the annual budget for the local office. The Grayson County office is part of Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star out of Irving. That headquarters office also provides support for the local operation.
“Bowl For Kids’ Sake is structured so you get five to six people on a team and they each raise $100 per person,” Regional Executive Director of BBBS North Texas Emily Neeley said. “Some businesses or companies that participate have an in-house fundraiser, like a bake sale.”
In addition to the money each participant was asked to raise, Lone Star Lanes was filled with ways attendees could help out the cause Saturday. BBBS had shirts on sale, teams could get their picture taken or participants could bid in silent auctions. There were auctions for bicycles, a Texas Rangers gift basket and baseballs signed by Hall of Famers Nolan Ryan, Hank Aaron and Brooks Robinson.
Neeley said that she was hoping the event would raise between $20,000 and $25,000.
“I would love to raise $25,000,” Neeley said. “All the money stays here locally to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grayson County.”
BBBS matches male and female volunteers with children aged 6 to 14 in need of a mentor. Neeley said the children in the program aren’t troubled kids, but ones who may be doing poorly academically in school or suffering from low self confidence or self esteem.
“We always have a waiting list of kids waiting to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister,” Neeley said. “Thirty-six percent of the volunteers that we have in our program are men, but 66 percent of the children in the program are boys. So it’s unbalanced.”
