Down Syndrome Ireland
TULLAMORE, U K (Offaly Express) - The 2012 Maynooth to Galway Charity Cycle has, so far, raised €130,000 in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland.
The 25th running of the charity event took place over the course of March 24, 25 and 26 and featured almost 250 cyclists who made their way from Maynooth to Galway and back. They were accompanied by 60 support crew and collectors.
The cycle marks the end of a season of fundraising that began soon after Down Syndrome Ireland was elected as this year’s chosen charity last October. It is organised by Maynooth Past and Present Students for Charity cycling club, a group which had humble beginnings in 1987 when Ronan Scully and10 clerical students first made the arduous trip to Galway.
The convoy of cyclists and support crew, which was almost two kilometres long, left the college early on Friday morning, March 24, and after eight hours of cycling they arrived into Eyre Square and were welcomed by the Mayor of Galway Hildegarde Naughton and lots of families involved with Down Syndrome Ireland.
The return journey on the Sunday took a similar. In the meantime they managed to raise close to €17,000 from the streets of Galway on the Saturday. Offalyman Ronan Scully, veteran cyclist and one of the founding members of Maynooth Students for Charity praised the work of all involved and said he was delighted with the success of the event.
He thanked the Gardai and the people of Kildare, Offaly, Westmeath and Galway especially all in Monroe’s Live for all their help and support both for this year and for years past.
“It was a wonderful weekend, a great life experience that was enjoyed by everyone who took part. Next year is the 26th anniversary of the Maynooth to Galway Cycle so we’re aiming to go even bigger then. And planning has already started,” he remarked.
