TOWANDA, PENNSYLVANIA (Towanda Daily Review) - Organizers of the second annual "Bicycles, Bands and BBQ" fundraiser in Athens are hoping to top the success of last year's event.
The fundraiser, to be held Saturday at Tanner's Bar on state route 199, promises a day full of fun for a good cause. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the American Diabetes Association, said Ryan Wood, co-owner of Tanner's. The event kicks off at 9 a.m. with a bicycle ride, and the bar will hold fundraising activities throughout the day, Wood said.
The event is sponsored partly by the Norfolk Southern PowerTrain team, whose members will lead the 30-mile bike ride through Athens' countryside. For the team, Saturday's ride serves a lead-in for the ADA's Tour de Cure event in Watkins Glen, N.Y., which the PowerTrain team will participate in later this summer, Wood said.
Those interested in joining the team for the ride may meet at the bar at around 8:30 a.m., prior to the event's start time, Wood said.
All that cycling works up an appetite, and Tanner's will start selling barbecue chicken at noon to feed riders and non-riders alike. A half-chicken will go for $5 on Saturday, and a half-chicken with two sides will sell for $7. Proceeds from the sale will go to the ADA.
The bar will have 190 chicken halves - 40 more than last year - and will also provide potatoes, beans and soda, Wood said.
Live music will also keep guests entertained through the afternoon and evening. Mutt's Road will perform from 2 to 6 p.m., and two bands - Facing Traffic and Uncle Stosh's Hardcore Pears - will play from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. A $5 cover will begin at about 8 p.m. for the evening's show, Wood said, with $2 per person to be donated to the ADA.
Last year's event raised "a good amount" of money for the ADA, and Wood said he is expecting to surpass the turnout Saturday. The fundraiser will be held rain or shine, but Wood said he was hopeful for good conditions for the outdoor events.
"We expect, with good cooperation from the weather, a good turnout," he said. "I think it will go better this year."
