LONDON, U K (French Tribune) - Recently, the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has appealed to the Indian Government to introduce a warning label over the packaging of non-vegetarian products. The PETA has asked the government to introduce health warning, informing the adverse outcome of consuming non-vegetable products to consumers.
Staff nutritionist Bhuvaneshwari Gupta of PETA India wrote a letter to the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ghulam Nabi Azad, to introduce the labeling system on the packaging of meat and other non-vegetable products.
In the letter, Mr. Gupta wrote, “Meat, egg and dairy diets are linked to needless yearly deaths. A mountain of studies links the consumption of animal products to India’s leading killers, including heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, stroke and obesity”.
He further said that the Health Ministry should introduce the labeling system, while marking the World Health Day. Although the demand has been made by the PETA India, the government seems to be least interested in going ahead with the idea.
National Egg Co-ordination Committee (NECC) is already promoting egg for health. If the labeling is introduced, then it would send mixed message to the consumers. The PETA went to the extent of saying that non-vegetable is harmful to health as cigarette and tobacco are.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that the PETA is seeking the permission of Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority for placing fake snake on the T. PETA is running a campaign against exotic animal skin trade.
Reptiles are slaughtered to make handbags, shoes and other accessories. PETA is against slaughtering of innocent creatures just for the amusement of humans. It is hoped that through the campaign, people would be made aware about the heinous trade and slaughter of reptiles.
