Operation Blessing
DALLAS, TEXAS (WFAA) - Hundreds of North Texas tornado victims have signed up for some desperately needed help.
In Lancaster, city leaders and the Red Cross have set up a central Tornado Relief Center, which opened Friday morning.
An indoor practice facility now serves as the main receiving and distribution center in Lancaster. It is helping the victims who lost so much to take the first start toward rebuilding their lives.
The facility is where those hit hardest by the twister are coming for help.
"I'm being displaced from my home,” said Andrea Harris, tornado victim. “So I pretty much just need a place to live."
Disaster relief workers and volunteers provide victims with what they need, including such essentials as food, diapers, hygiene kits, food and water.
“I need everything,” said Eunice Webb, tornado victim. “It's like starting life all over again, but I'm happy."
Across town at the First Baptist Church, international humanitarian group Operation Blessing has set up camp.
Sylvester Wallace is signing up for free debris removal. His house had damage to the roof, fence and trees.
"It's just a blessing that my house is still standing,” said Sylvester Wallace, tornado victim. All the homes around me are not standing."
"We're here to help the residents clean up debris, put blue tarps on their homes, chainsaw work, help them even claim some of their personal belongings," said Jody Gettys, Operation Blessing director.
Hundreds of volunteers are expected to converge on the community Saturday.
