Feeding America
GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT (Taste of Country) - Rascal Flatts and their Big Machine country friends hit Twitter last week to post a new video about a new initiative to fight hunger across America. With names like Justin Moore, Sunny Sweeney, Eli Young Band, the Band Perry, Brantley Gilbert, Thomas Rhett, Edens Edge and Martina McBride all championing the cause to “outnumber hunger,” General Mills, Big Machine Label Group and Feeding America are able to get millions of meals to families across the country.
Using this video to spread the word, the country acts pointed out that one in six American families struggles with hunger — a statistic the artists themselves even found shocking. In his onscreen cameo, the cowboy hat-clad Moore said, “As a husband and a father, I will do whatever it takes to provide for my family.” To help others do the same, Feeding America will stock local food banks through the Outnumber Hunger initiative.
Now, you can purchase specially marked General Mills product in your local grocery store (Cheerios, Green Giant, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury and more) and then enter a code online that will help Feeding America secure five meals on behalf of local food banks.
The below clip also shows Rascal Flatts taking a tour of the Hillside Community FoodBank of New Jersey, which is one of the food banks that works with the organization Feeding America. Phyllis Dunlop, VP for resource development and marking for the food bank, says their main concern is the growing number of Americans who are struggling with hunger (now 17 million families).
“When children come here,” she explains to the band, “and they try to explain this problem to children, they’ll say it’s really just homeless people in their minds, but no it’s somebody in your class. It’s your neighbor — somebody you see every day on a daily basis.”
Speaking to the severity of the problem, Rascal Flatts’ Joe Don Rooney reflects, “You know you take it for granted, those of us that every day wake up and we have a meal. These people wake up and the first thing on their mind is they don’t have anything to eat. So it’s kind of shocking and staggering to really think about the reality of that, and yes one in six Americans struggles with hunger. But together we can all make a difference.”
