Animal Rescue League here in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA (CBS Local) - When severe weather strikes, people are often quick to step up and help those who have lost everything. But what about the animals impacted by Mother Nature’s wrath?

The Animal Rescue League here in Pittsburgh is doing all it can to find loving owners for pets recently displaced by tornadoes.

On March 2, deadly twisters touched down in London, Ky., about 70 miles south of Lexington. Lives were lost, homes were demolished and pets were separated from their owners.

Now, more than a month after those tornadoes, some of those pets are getting a chance at a brand new beginning.

Ten dogs and one cat, rescued by the United States Humane Society, arrived at the Animal Rescue League this morning.

“People never reclaimed them, either because of the situation they were in or they just couldn’t find them unfortunately,” said Dan Rossi, of the Animal Rescue League.

The animals traveled in a giant trailer lined with crates to make the trip comfortable for the pets that have already been through so much.

“We’ll process them, spay and neuter them if they need it and get them out for adoption here in Pittsburgh,” said Rossi.

They should be ready to go in about a week. The dogs are all different breeds, sizes and ages.

This isn’t the first time the Animal Rescue League has jumped into action for pets from other states, and it won’t be the last.

“We’ve taken in dogs from hoarding cases and from other storm situations in the past, we’ve been following this situation for the past month and agreed last week to take 10 of them,” Rossi added.
