Mobile food pantry feeds hundreds in Kannapolis neighborhood

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA (WCNC) - Hundreds of families have food to feed their families after Cooperative Christian Ministry brought their mobile pantry to Kannapolis. The ministry partners with Second Harvest Food Bank and local churches to bring food to areas of need.

"This is a wonderful thing, I come to everyone," said mother Diane Gill.

Gill has five little mouths to feed, and three came with her to get much needed groceries for meals after she says being out of work in tough times make it hard to provide.

"Gas prices keep going up and up and up, and if you drive a suburban you can't put gas in your car and buy food. It's either or sometimes," said Gill.

That's why Cooperative Christian Ministry with Second Harvest Food Bank hosts mobile food pantries once a month.

“We get about six tons of food per mobile food pantry and see on average about 350 households," said Joanie Reeder with CCM.

It brings the food closer to home for those in need, this time at Memorial United Methodist Church in Kannapolis.

"When talking to the pastor of the church, this is a depressed area but…it's growing. There's a housing development going in back here,” said Reeder.

The rain didn't keep hundreds from waiting their turn, knowing this food will help them in many ways.

"It allows us to at least pay more bills we need, like gas, especially gas," said Alfred Branscum.

Mary Cannon is so thankful she stuck around to volunteer and help out.

"Because I love it, I love it, and I want to be some help to somebody else,” said Cannon.

Though nearly all the food ran out, each family was able to fill their grocery cart and know that generosity of others will feed their family another week.

"I know the Lord is going to make a way and I know I'm not too good to come out to stuff like this," added Gill.

About 300 families were fed at the Memorial United Methodist Church mobile pantry. In Cabarrus County alone the group says they fed 3,500 families last year.
