Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA (Inland Valley Daily Bulletin) - Alta Loma Elementary School students recently raised $2,871.91 in their Pennies for Patients drive for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Deanne Conroy, student government coordinator, along with the Alta Loma Elementary School Student Council, organized the Pennies for Patients kickoff assembly and worked diligently to aid teachers in cashing in collections brought in by students.
At the assembly, a representative from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society explained how the money raised would be used.
As the drive started, Student Council members visited each classroom and delivered containers for collection. Alta Loma Elementary School students responded by asking parents, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, grandparents, and friends for spare change to contribute to the cause.
Some students brought their allowance and money from their piggy banks. When asked why she gave, one student said, "To help the doctors find a cure. I had a family member with cancer."
Classes competed against each other, and the class reaching the highest amount was awarded with a pasta party from Olive Garden.
The first year of the drive, 2010, Alta Loma Elementary students collected $1,446, the second year, 2011, they collected $1,835. This year the 489 students collected almost $6 per child.
