Good Shepherd Food Bank
WESTBROOK, MAINE (KeepMEcurrent.com) - Dead River Company, headquartered in South Portland, has donated $115,000 to buy a 48-foot-long tractor trailer for Auburn’s Good Shepherd Food Bank, Maine’s largest clearinghouse for donated items to local food shelters and panties.
The trailer, unveiled April 4 at stops in Auburn, Portland and Brewer, will help Good Shepherd deliver 13 million pounds of food per year to more than 600 agencies in all 16 Maine counties. According to Good Shepherd, more than 15 percent, or 200,000, of Maine’s 1.3 million residents go hungry on a daily basis. Good Shepherd is currently able to provide for 100,000 people per month. Federal statistics ranks Maine 13th among the states in “food insecurity,” defined as lack of access to enough food, in enough variety, to ensure adequate nutrition.
“This donation will make a big difference in our ability to support food pantries and other hunger-relief organizations in Maine,” said David Pierson, chairman of the Good Shepherd board of directors, in a release issued for the trailer unveiling. “With this gift, Dead River will be helping us reach families in need in all corners of the state every day.”
“By the nature of our work, Dead River employees are on the ground, in the communities we serve, and inside homes,” said Dead River CEO Bob Moore. “We see the need first hand and want to help address the dire circumstances facing so many families.”
Moore added that Dead River, northern New England’s largest distributor of petroleum products, intends to extend its philanthropic efforts to fight hunger across the company’s service area.
Founded in 1909 as a forest products company, Dead River got out of that business in 1987 to focus on petroleum and property. In October, it sold its 19 convenience stores in Maine to the Circle K division of Canadian corporation Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. It maintains more than 50 retail fuel offices in Maine, Mass., New Hampshire and Vermont, adding 11 in December when it bought Fleming Oil Company of Brattleboro, Vt.
