Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

MONTGOMERY, PENNSYLVANIA (Montgomery Newspapers) - Abington Junior High School turned over checks for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for $3,800 — participating in the “Pasta for Pennies” program. The school began the fundraiser last month, with students and staff bringing in their small extra change.

The money that was collected will help cancer researchers find a cure for leukemia and lymphoma. This is the 14th year that teacher Danielle Martinelli and the seventh year that teacher Mollie McGeary at the junior high school have been spearheading this fundraising effort for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The Olive Garden provides a pasta “dinner” for the top fundraising classrooms. Students from Ms. Sicilia’s homeroom, which collected $350.70 and Mrs. Gates homeroom, which collected $344.54, as the classes that raised the most money, were treated to a pasta “dinner.”

Pennies for Patients / Pasta for Pennies is a nationally recognized service learning, character education, and philanthropy fundraising program for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society that gives students a unique experience making a difference through teamwork — working together to aid thousands of children and adults in the fight against cancers like leukemia and lymphoma. During the three-week event, students bring spare change to their classrooms to benefit local chapters of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Since the program began in 1994, it has raised over $40 million to fight leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma. More than 1 million students in 1,600 schools across the country participate each year. Olive Garden Restaurants has been the “Pasta for Pennies” component of the program.
