LAKELAND, FLORIDA (The Ledger) - Texas Cattle Company of Lakeland recently was recognized as a major contributor of a statewide effort to battle pediatric cancer.
In their participation in the Corks against Cancer event, the long-standing, local company contributed more than $2,000 toward this campaign to Moffitt Cancer Center for its research in pediatric cancer.
"This is the first year it was presented to me. Alan Matthys, the field sales manager of Central Florida for Constellation Wines U.S., asked us if we would get involved," Grant Piché said.
Piché is the director of operations for the Lakeland location of the Texas Cattle Company.
Piché said Blackstone Winery of California created the Corks against Cancer event, and offered to contribute $12 for every case of wine purchased.
"We jumped right on it. We knew we could really go through this if we put it as our house wine and we could really be successful with this and raise a lot of money for Moffitt Cancer Center," Piché said.
The Texas Cattle Company was able to present the Moffitt Cancer Center at Tampa/USF, a check for $10,000 from their Florida locations combined.
The Lakeland and St. Petersburg locations raised $2,000 of that total. Piché said Texas Cattle Company was the single largest contributor in this statewide campaign.
"We have a philosophy well known in the restaurant business. ‘If you're not serving somebody, then serve somebody who is.' Doing this for Moffitt Cancer Pediatrics is a no-brainer," he said.
Piché said Texas Cattle Company participates in up to four charity events per month and is very involved in community fundraising efforts.
"We have a great staff over here, and they have been with us for a long time. If they have a cause and they bring it to us, we are all over it, but cancer affects everybody and we have lost staff members to cancer. To be able to get involved with this program is a win-win for everybody," Piche' said.
Currently the Lakeland location of the Texas Cattle Company is assisting the Lakeland Police Department.
"We are business partners with the community. We are really fortunate that we have owners, Ron and Dana Woodsby, who allow us to reach out.
The Texas Cattle Company, 735 East Main St., has been operating in Lakeland for 38 years.
