BELFAST, MAINE (WLBZ-TV) - Dozens of people were in Belfast on Sunday looking to make strides in the fight against breast cancer.
More than 100 runners took part in the first ever "Ta Ta Trot 5 K." They raised donations to run the streets of Belfast and all to help one group walk the streets of another city.
The 'Holy Walkamoles' are looking to take their 4 person team to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Boston.
The group needed to raise about $7,000 to take part, which then goes to the Avon Foundation for Women to support breast cancer research and treatment program. Those who took part in the run included area non-profits which also work to help those touched by breast cancer. Members of the Walkamoles say stamping out that disease is a goal that many share.
"Almost everybody has somebody that they know or that they're related to or that they love in some form that has had breast cancer or is going through treatments right now," said Mandie Sawyer, who is the captain of the the team, "Everything from our team...to our donors to our supporters...I mean it's very personal for people."
Private donations helped the Holy Walkamoles reach about $6,000 going into Sunday's run. This morning the event raised about $1,700.
Boston's Avon Walk for Breast Cancer will be held from May 19-20. Since starting nationally the walk has raised more than $740 million for breast cancer programs around the U.S.
