AUGUSTA, GEORGIA (The Augusta Chronicle) - Local firefighters are hitting the streets to collect donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The annual Fill the Boot drive runs through Saturday at intersections and major roads across the city. Local firefighters hope to raise $30,000 for the organization, which operates a clinic in Augusta and offers camps to local children with neuromuscular diseases.

More than 250 local firefighters volunteer their time for the effort. They fan out at intersections across the city on their lunch breaks and between calls to collect donations in each firefighter’s rubber boots, Augusta-Richmond County Fire Department Lt. Daniel Steele said.

Motorists are accustomed to seeing firefighters collecting donations during Labor Day weekend. This year, however, the event was moved to March to take advantage of the cooler weather, said Laura Reid, the fundraising coordinator for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Columbia, which serves Augusta.

Last year, Augusta firefighters helped raise $19,000 for MDA.

“A lot of people don’t realize the money stays locally,” she said. “Just giving a dollar or spare change is so valuable.”
