WIGAN, U K (Wigan Today) - “I’m doing it for you, mum” - those were the poignant words from young Charlie Simpson this week that stopped his mother Jane in her tracks.

Ready to chastise him, she had asked why he had been running around and riding his scooter all the way through Orrell, refusing to come indoors.

But she was stunned, proud and moved when the kind-hearted 11-year-old told her that he had been running his own special marathon to raise money for Epilepsy Action.

The Orrell St James’s Primary School pupil had gathered together several pals and spent the day travelling to family members and friends in the area collecting money for the charity.

It was an emotional moment for Jane, who has suffered from nocturnal epilepsy for more than 20 years.

He told her mum he was doing it for her after experiencing first hand how the illness can affect someone you love.

Jane said: “He came running up with three friends saying he had been doing a little charity run.

“He had been running round the community and wasn’t going indoors until 5pm.

“I asked him why he was doing it and he told me he was doing it for me and to raise money for Epilepsy Action.

“It just brought tears to my eyes. I couldn’t believe how thoughtful he was being.

“He’s such a lovely and sensitive little boy but to do something like this off his own back really is something else. I was bursting with pride.”

Nocturnal epilepsy is a condition in which patients experience seizures at night, usually while sleeping.

Often, people with the condition are unaware that they’re having night seizures, as they can sometimes go into a deep sleep immediately after having a night seizure.

Jane added: “Charlie is very protective over me.

“He has been brought up knowing about my illness and has witnessed the problems.

“I’m a member of Epilepsy Action so he knows about the charity through them.

“He raised a little bit of money but for me, just the way he thought up of getting on his scooter and putting a rule over himself not to go indoors was amazing.

“He went to see his grandparents and just said: ‘Sorry, I can’t come inside, I’m doing a charity run.’”
