NORTH CANTON, OHIO (Patch.com) - Three hundred pounds is a pretty hefty haul (especially when you weigh around 80 pounds yourself).

That's how much Clearmount Elementary fifth-graders donated to the Stark County Humane Society after their three-week-long pet supply drive this month.

Clearmount Principal Matt Ile said the group also sent off two huge boxes of supplies, which included toys, collars, leashes and other items.

The folks at the Humane Society were touched by the students' efforts to help local animals, receptionist Cathy Shafer said.

“Especially when kids are involved, it’s 10 times nicer," Shafer said. "When the kids want to do a drive, that’s really something. It’s very heartwarming. It just puts your fatith back in the the children.”

She said the students made a big difference at the Stark County Humane Society.

"We use every pound and every square inch of what we get to make these animals' lives better here.”

In addition to the pet supply drive, the students also are trying to increase the number of volunteers at local shelters as well as the number of adoptions in Stark County. They ask that you check out the animals at StarkHumane.org.
