OXFORD, CONNECTICUT (Patch.com) - Two local companies are volunteering to help natural disaster victims, and people living in poverty, walk a little easier. And you can help.

Meadow Brook Estates, a Haynes Development 55 and older active adult community located in Oxford, is partnering with Seymour-based Haynes Materials Co. to collect 2,500 pairs of new or gently worn shoes. The companies are working in conjunction with Soles4Souls, a Nashville, Tenn.-based charity that collects shoes from the warehouses of footwear companies and the closets of people like you for distribution to victims of natural disasters or extreme poverty in the United States and abroad.

The partnership between the companies and Soles4Souls "was a perfect fit, no pun intended," said Kathryn Ekstrom, project executive for Meadow Brook Estates.

"Our prospective buyers are looking to downsize and (are) cleaning out their closets anyway; this provides them an opportunity to give new life to their gently used shoes,” she said, adding that many of Meadow Brook Estate's residents and prospective buyers “live by the motto waste not, want not.”

Meadow Brook Estates and Haynes Materials will collect shoes until May 1, and they have established the following drop-off locations for the public:

-Three Haynes Landscape & Masonry Supply Stores - 3 Echo Valley Road, Oxford; 24 Woodbury Road, Deep River; and 3217 Winsted Road, Torrington

-Meadow Brook Estates at 135 Meadow Brook Road, Oxford

For more information email Kathryn Ekstrom at kekstrom@haynesdevelopment.com or call her at 203-888-8115.
