My Father’s Heart Street Ministry
PORTLAND, OREGON (Clackamas Review) - Mike Valdrow, charter member and the first president of the North Clackamas Sunrise Rotary Club, recently did something he has not done for the past six years –get a haircut.
On Saturday, March 3, he stepped into D & J Barber Shop in the Fred Meyer Oak Grove shopping center and said, “Cut it all!”
He announced the challenge to his Rotary Club last month and promptly raised more than $1,300 for a donation to My Father’s Heart Street Ministry, which helps homeless and low-income individuals and families throughout Clackamas County.
“Other people can really benefit from the hair on your head,” a newly bald Valdrow said. “My Father’s provides a place for the homeless in Clackamas County to go during the day, and if I can provide a little help for people to remain productive members of society, then I am going to do it.”
D & J’s barber Dewaine George donated his time to shave Valdrow’s head. Valdrow had about 10 inches of gray locks he donated to Locks of Love for cancer victims.
On hand were Rotary Club President Shelly Elmer along with members Todd Caldwell, Fred Bachofner and Valdrow’s son, John.
The first thing Valdrow noticed: “My hat is like Velcro when I take it off.”
With all of the cold weather lately, he says he’s worn a hat more in the past two weeks than the rest of his life combined.
The Rotary Club of North Clackamas Sunrise has 32 members and meets every Friday morning at 7 a.m. For more information, call Fred Bachofner, 503-705-1827.
