Westmoreland County Food Bank
PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review) - The Westmoreland County Food Bank serves 7,000 families each month, and 34 percent of agency clients are children.
So when Karen Piper read about the Empty Bowls Project, an international grassroots effort to fight hunger, she was inspired to found a soup luncheon to benefit the food bank.
She did it with help from friends and connections made from her years as a school board member and elementary school principal.
Piper's event has been hosted gratis for four years at St. Bruno Parish Hall in South Greensburg, and it raised more than $46,000 in the past three. Children from throughout the county and professional potters decorate and donate bowls, which are bought by luncheon attendees.
The bowls that didn't sell at this year's event on March 11 will be taken to festivals and sold to add to this year's profit.
Piper, a cancer survivor and heart transplant recipient, wants to give back and share the feeling of being blessed.
"I just wanted a project that would go on," she said. "People from all over Westmoreland County have called to get involved."
Steelers player Brett Keisel and singer Randy Travis signed bowls for a silent auction.
Eat'n Park brought Smiley cookies, and games and prizes were from 107.1 WHJB. Belak Flowers wrapped every Chinese auction basket made from contributed items.
And there were 30 soups provided, such as the Cheeseburger from Chuckhouse Grille and Tavern and the Tomato Crab Bisque from Solstice.
In return, Piper said she and her friends patronize the businesses of contributors.
Syria Shriners Jerry Sciullo, Ron Wassel, Ron Gongaware, Rob Brinkley and John Romesburg clowned around and made animal balloons the entire afternoon.
