CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA (WCNC) - Some students at a local elementary school are doing amazing things, not for themselves, but for others.
They've raised more than $11,000 for charity at Matthews Elementary School.
"We've been doing big things and it helped a lot of people in need," said student Brooke Peters.
Students have been busy this school year raising money is various ways.
"We've done a canned food drive for the homeless people,” said student Cooper Lee. “Also, we've done this Pasta for Pennies program where kids from all over the school bring in loose change that they've found or you can take money out of your piggy bank or anything."
All of that loose change totaled up to more than $11,000 to be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma society.
It's a lesson outside of the classroom that ties in with character education, something students have been talking about since the start of the school year.
"We're helping both kids not just with Leukemia but other cancer diseases and it's really helping them out because think about it, if we were them, I would not like to have cancer and stay in a hospital for all these months and years,” noted student Kyle Ziefert.
“It's really helping out because, like they say, it saves like enough out of 10 kids' lives and we want to get it to 10 out of 10."
