Alberta Capital Region United Way
EDMONTON, CANADA (Edmonton Journal) - The Alberta Capital Region United Way campaign raised more money than ever last year, organizers announced this week.
At a gala event in Edmonton Thursday, 2011 campaign chairman Mike Percy announced participants raised $22.1 million last year, $600,000 more than the campaign’s goal.
“It was a great team effort,” Percy said Friday, noting large and small companies and organizations contributed to the effort. “It just shows the community came together.
“The United Way has really focused on letting people know the impact that their support has. They’ve had a message that really very much resonates with people: This is about building a better community. It’s not about fundraising, it’s about building a community.”
Money raised by the United Way benefits a range of community organizations, including Edmonton-area literacy programs, the food bank, shelters and seniors’ programs, and health and counselling programs. Much of the work, Percy said, is focused on tackling “root causes” of issues like homelessness or keeping children in schools.
This week’s gala also paid tribute to Edmonton philanthropist and businessman Don Wheaton, who died last year.
