Charity: Water
AMARILLO, TEXAS (MyHighPlains) - Mr. Merker's 5th grade Forest Hill Elementary class has a motto - Learn. Create. Connect. Give.
"I just wanted to see where their heart was, as far as this whole connecting aspect," Mr. Merker said.
So he gave them a choice, each pay three dollars for a field trip or use that money to start a service project.
The class went with Charity Water. The class set a big goal. Raising $5,000 will mean a well will be built some where in Latin America, Southeast Asia or Africa.
The kids are the ones doing all of the campaigning for donations. They've made a presentation in every one of Forest Hill's 35 classrooms. They've designed the artwork that lines the hallways. They're reaching outside of the school for help.
"I've been pretty blown away. I mean, I've been real careful to not be the one that is carrying this.," Mr. Merker said. "I wanted to see where they could take it."
The class is still about $2,500 short, with only about a month to collect donations. You can help them get there.
Go to mycharitywater.org/learncreateconnectgive and donate in any amount. Donations made online are tax deductible.
If you'd like to make a cash donation, you can drop it by Forest Hill Elementary.
