FLINT, MICHIGAN (The Flint Journal) - The United Way campaign in Genesee County has received a $93,000 boost from the General Motors Foundation.

During a noon press conference at the Flint Assembly plant on VanSlyke Rd., United Way officials were expected to say GM Foundation donation will bring them to within 81% of the United Way's $2.9 million dollar goal for the 2011-12 campaign.

"It's definitely needed," said Chris Wise, Chairman of the United Way of Genesee County campaign. " It's a large amount of money, it shows how much GM supports the United Way in this town. We're very appreciative."

GM hourly and salaried employees have already committed $500,000 in donations through payroll deductions. The GM Foundation contribution now brings the UAW-GM commitment for the United Way to some $600,000, or about 20% of the total yearly goal for the campaign.

Wise says the United Way has already exceeded where the campaign was a year ago at this time. But they will spend the next two and a half months with a big push to try and meet this year's $2.9 million goal.

"We will have billboards, we will be getting on the radio, you will see information about the United Way in newspapers, and we will do a direct mail piece as well," said Wise. "It is important that we inform people what the United Way does and how all the dollars stay in the county and how they're used. We want to get the word out and get people more involved."

The money raised through United Way's annual campaign pays for programs serving more than 35,000 residents in Genesee County.

It funds more than 140,000 meals at food centers and soup kitchens. The campaign also supported more than 4,800 students in the 'SKIP to a Great Start' program.

At its peak some 10 years ago Wise said, the United Way of Genesee County's yearly goal was around $6 million.

"Now we're at half that but our needs have only increased," Wise said. "The campaign was in a decline for about 10 years, but I believe we have bottomed out and are already climbing."
