Hearts Around the World
VANCOUVER, CANADA (Vancouver Sun) - Vancouver-based Dr. Sanjiv Gandhi and a hand-picked team of health care professionals are setting out in April on a medical mission.
The mission?
To perform surgeries and provide education about pediatric cardiac surgery and cardiology to doctors in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City.
"We will be operating on a number of children with congenital heart problems during our trip and providing educational talks to members of the Vietnamese team," the Head of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at BC Children's Hospital, Dr. Gandhi said.
The medical team embarking on this mission consists of team-lead Dr. Gandhi, cardiologists, ICU doctors and nurses, a perfusionist and an echo technician hailing from hospitals around North America.
The team will work for one week at the Cho-Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.
Dr. Gandhi and his team organized the mission with the help of Connecticut-based charity Hearts Around the World.
The organization has completed multiple health care missions to the affiliate Vietnam hospital in the past, however, Dr. Ghandi's April journey is just the second of its kind focused on pediatric cardiac care.
"I led the first [mission] two years ago," Ghandi said.
"I think it is our job as medical professionals to not just treat patients where we live - but to contribute to medical care and education of those less fortunate than us in under-served parts of the world."
