'Twilight' Star Rachelle Lefevre Fights For Homeless Pets With Best Friends Animal Society

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA (Glittarazzi) - If you are a member of the Cullen family in the movie Twilight, Vampiress Victoria might end your blood-sucking life.

But, if you are a homeless dog or cat, Rachelle Lefevre, the actress that plays Victoria in the hit film, will work very hard to make sure you are rescued.

This week, Rachelle -- who is an ambassador for the no-kill shelter, as well as an animal rights activist and the proud parent of many adopted pets -- was at the grand opening of the Best Friends Animal Society's new no-kill animal adoption center in Mission Hills, Calif.

She first became involved with BFAS five years ago as a donor. Then, three years ago she told us she started helping the shelter with some of its initiatives. Now, she is one of its celebrity ambassadors.

The actress said if there was one lesson she would like her fans and friends to learn from her activism, it would be that is very important to make sure you get your pets from local animal shelters instead of pet stores.

"When you buy from a pet store, chances are extremely high that the puppies came from puppy mills," she said.

Puppy mills are places that breed dogs to make money. The owners of them do not care about the animals, which they house in tiny cages and in bad conditions, with little human contact and often no veterinary care.

Rachelle said the great thing about BFAS is that it supports many "no-kill" shelters (meaning that they never euthanize animals, unlike most government-funded shelters).

Although BFAS's building was funded by a Los Angeles bond, one of the things that is so important about this shelter is that it's privately funded, Rachelle said. The center will receive donations (approximately $1 million per year) to pay for staffing and to keep it a no-kill facility.

"In 2012, more than 3,000 animals will be adopted through this shelter," she said. "And, more than 6,000 pets will be spayed and neutered through low-cost and free programs."

Did Rachelle's role as a vampire help her to connect with the plight of animals?

"It definitely helped me to sympathize with the plight of the pit bull," she said, as she giggled at our question and told us about BFAS's Pit Bull initiative. "Pit bulls get a bad rep for being a dangerous breed, but they are really misunderstood. They are not dangerous. In fact, any animal can be made to be aggressive ... just like vampires."

So, don't mess with the animals, folks, because Rachelle's got their back.

And, she is the one with the "wicked curve ball."
