OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA (NewsOK.com) - Ian Somerhalder, animal advocate and star of The CW’s hit series “The Vampire Diaries,” will receive the prestigious Wyler Award at The Humane Society of the United States’ 26th Genesis Awards on March 24 in Beverly Hills, Calif., according to a news release.
The Wyler Award is one of the animal protection organization’s highest honors and is given to a celebrity or public figure for raising awareness of animal issues through the media.
A champion for animal and environmental causes, Somerhalder is being recognized for spreading the word via traditional and social medial about critical animal welfare issues including shark finning, the Canadian seal hunt, fur in fashion and endangered species.
In addition, he is the founder of the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, which has a mission to empower, educate and collaborate with people and projects to positively impact Earth and its creatures.
“The tireless efforts of The Humane Society of the United States to protect animals around the world has always been an inspiration to me and I’m honored to be recognized with this year’s Wyler Award,” Somerhalder said in the news release.
Named after former Broadway actress, animal advocate and founder of The Genesis Awards, Gretchen Wyler, the Wyler Award has also been bestowed upon Sir Paul McCartney, Hayden Panettiere, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, and Kristin Davis.
The 26th Genesis Awards, hosted by “Dancing With the Stars” judge Carrie Ann Inaba, is the only event of its kind honoring the news and entertainment media for drawing attention to animal protection issues.
The 26th Genesis Awards is scheduled to air in May on Animal Planet.
