Charity Struggles To Help Families Pay Utility Bills

JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA (WJACtv.com) - Winter is still several weeks away, but Cambria County's Catholic Charities Agency is already struggling to keep up with household utility demands in the area.

Officials with the agency said its utility requests have increased more than 400 percent since the recession started.

Catholic Charities case worker Dawn Karsaba said many requests are coming from middle-class families. The bulk of the requests started coming in around May and has spiked through the summer. Now, the agency will have to give out more than $100,000 to make sure working poor families have gas, water and electricity.

The agency helps 1,700 families a year and if a LIHEAP cut proposal goes through, they could get another set of new faces asking for help.

Catholic Charities receives some government funding, but officials said they will have to rely on private donors and the United Way to keep afloat.
