Charity Description in 500 words or less.
Bangor Humane Society was founded in 1869 making us the oldest Humane Society in the State of Maine. We are a donor supported, private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization supported almost entirely by donations from compassionate & concerned citizens in our community. We operate Maine's largest animal care and adoption facility, both in terms of the total number of animals handled and geographical area we serve. The Bangor Humane Society cares for approximately 5,000 owner released and stray animals each year. We serve over 200 communities in Maine, including eastern, coastal, down-east, and parts of northern Maine. After a major capital campaign that raised more than 2.5 million dollars, we moved into our present facility in 1997.
Volunteer Description in 500 words or less.
Volunteering at the Bangor Humane Society is fun and incredibly rewarding. Thank you for thinking about joining our volunteer team! Please be aware that we do require at least a six month time commitment so that we can make the most of your time and the on-the-job training we will give you. Anyone under 16 years of age who would like to volunteer must be accompanied by an adult (21+ years of age) during all volunteer hours. There are a wide range of volunteer positions ranging from direct care for the animals to helping with office work and fundraising. All volunteers should expect to work with members of the public and potential adopters as well as the animals. We work carefully to match your skills and interests with the jobs that need to be done every day.
