Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha Charity Profile
Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha, Inc., provides confidential, one-to-one tutoring and mentoring services to individuals who need help with reading, writing, spelling, math and English as a second language.
LCGW began in 1986 with a grant from the Waukesha County Federated Library System and further support from the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
In 1990, LCGW incorporated as a tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization providing services as an independent agency.
LCGW is affiliated with Laubach Literacy International, which is the oldest and largest volunteer literacy organization in the world, and its U.S. arm - Laubach Literacy Action.
Funding is provided through donations from individuals, service organizations and businesses as well as a Community Development Block Grant and the United Way.
Services are targeted to people who live or work in Waukesha Country and who are of low to moderate income. These individuals are at greater risk of being unemployed or underemployed, working in minimum wage jobs or holding jobs that require retraining.

Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha Volunteer Information
More than 250 volunteer tutors work one-on-one with students at all skill levels and with a variety of needs. The Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha maintains only three paid part-time staff positions.
Tutors receive twelve hours of training in the Laubach Way to Reading before working with adult new readers. The Council also offers a nine-hour training course for those who wish to tutor students in English as a second language.
Tutors and students will generally meet and work at the public library most convenient to both. Some tutors do meet in the homes of students who are homebound by a disability or who lack transportation or child care.
In addition, many other volunteers serve the agency by working in the office, serving on committees or raising money.
