Oshkosh Area Community Pantry Charity Profile

Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering, the the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul. What is the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a Volunteer Catholic Lay Organization comprised of 850,000 members in 131 countries, who visit the poor and needy people in their homes. They provide comfort and financial assistance to those they visit. As a reflection of the whole family of God, members, who are known as Vincentians, are drawn from every ethic and cultural background, age group and economic level. Volunteers serve within parish groups called Conferences. They strive toward increased spiritual growth through acts of charity. Groups of conferences join together to form Councils, which provide for professional services. Vincentians are united in an international society of charity by their spirit of poverty, humility, and sharing, which is nourished by prayer and reflection, mutually supportive gatherings and adherence to a basic Rule. Organized locally, Vincentians witness God's love by embracing all works of charity and justice. The Society collaborate with other people of good will in relieving need and addressing its causes, making no distinction in those served, because, in them, Vincentians see the face of Christ. Society of St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Stores The Society Thrift Stores play an important role in providing assistance to those in need. Through a staff of employees and volunteers we work to collect, evaluate and merchandise a variety of donated goods. This merchandise provides a low cost shopping alternative of quality goods to low income individuals and families. Those who cannot afford the clothing, furniture and other household items are provided for through a Vincentians initiated referral system. Serving Christ's needy is the first purpose of all St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Stores. To insure the long-term continuity of the Stores, sound business practices are utilized. Surplus funds from the Store operation are used to assist the Society by offsetting the expenses of other programs of assistance provided by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to help needy individuals and families. Nationally The Society has over 400 Stores and warehouses that are operated by the various Councils throughout the United States. As an organization we provide a number of important functions to both the local community and the nation. By collecting such items as clothing, furniture, household items, appliances, vehicles and other items, we are one of the major recycling resources in the country. Millions of pounds of clothing, hundreds of thousands of pieces of furniture and ton after ton of household goods are given a second life and kept out of landfills. Precious resources for more new items are preserved a little longer since people make due with recycles items they find in our Thrift Stores. By the prudent use of these items, the quality of life for many in need is improved throughout the local community. If this help was not available, these needs would have to be met with public tax dollars. These community benefits are provided by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Stores in community after community, throughout the UNited States as we help the men, women and children it is our privilege to serve.
