Hospice of Southern West Virginia Charity Profile

Hospice of Southern WV exists to serve the needs of individuals suffering from life-limiting illnesses as well as to serve the individuals caring for them. Our emphasis is on comfort and quality of life as we provide the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of the terminally ill and their loved ones in Fayette, Raleigh, Summers and Wyoming Counties. Our Hospice services are provided primarily in patient homes, but may also continue in most long-term care facilities and personal care homes. The Doug and Lucy Bowers Hospice House is an additional option for those in need of end-of-life care in southern West Virginia. Hospice of Southern WV, Inc. is a non-profit organization and we do not discriminate on the basis of age, sex, religion, nationality, race, sexual orientation,diagnosis, disability or ability to pay. As a non-profit organization, Hospice of Southern WV depends upon the generosity of the community for donations and volunteers to continue its services.

Hospice of Southern West Virginia Volunteer Information

“Every day I am at the Bowers House, I feel that if I have helped one person it’s been a great day.” -HSWV Volunteer What Will I Do As a Volunteer? Volunteers are carefully chosen and trained to act as a neighbor and friend to families who request their services. These services include: providing companionship running errands preparing light meals assisting with hobbies watering plants assisting with occasional household chores reading to patients playing cards or games being a family friend administrative support writing letters writing thank you notes Most importantly, HOSPICE volunteers listen. Who Can Volunteer? persons 16 years (if accompanied by an adult during training) or older working professionals retirees homemakers college students anyone looking to brighten someone else’s life What type of training will I receive? All volunteers must complete our initial six (6) hour training course. If you are interested in expanding your volunteer efforts to include direct care to patients in their homes, in the nursing home environment or at the Bowers Hospice House, an additional six (6) hours of training is required. Volunteer Training Class Tuesday, February 28th 5-8 PM Thursday, March 1st 5-8 PM Must attend both nights to become a trained volunteer. Classes will be held at Wickham Administrative Building, 456 Cranbery Drive, Beckley. It is also important to note that all volunteers must undergo background screenings and drug tests, and are subject to HIPPA compliance and a Code of Ethics.
