Bahia Street View Charity Profile

Bahia Street breaks cycles of poverty, inequality and violence by providing high quality educational opportunities for economically-impoverished young women and girls in Brazil. The program was developed by African-Brazilian residents of shantytowns in Salvador, Brazil to provide a solution to what they believe to be their most pressing problems. Sixty girls are enrolled in the Bahia Street program, which includes comprehensive education, meals, health and hygiene care, and leadership training. Beyond Brazil, Bahia Street provides opportunities for education and engagement in programs that explore race, class, poverty, and collaborative international development.

Bahia Street Volunteer Information

Bahia Street is run in the US and UK with the support of hundreds of volunteers who help to run events, organize fundraisers, find potential funders, and create educational programs. Volunteer opportunities range from office interns to event coordinators based on the volunteer's interests and the needs of the organization at the time. In Brazil, Bahia Street has a very limited volunteer program. We believe that we best meet our mission in the long term when local people work for local solutions, and we support local capacity-building by hiring local people to do the jobs that volunteers seek to do. Having said that, we do have two opportunities for volunteers to help our work at the Center. (1) January Work Party-- two week opportunity to help get the Center ready for the new school year, which begins in February, and (2) Volunteer English language teacher-- 3 month teaching opportunity working with local faculty to deliver English language instruction. In the US, all donations to Bahia Street are tax-deductible. Bahia Street is a 501(c)3 organization. For more information about UK donations, please visit www.bahiastreet.org.uk. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated. While we do not have (or endorse) sponsor a girl programs, many of our donors like to think of their sponsorship in terms of being a part of a girl’s education and commit to a monthly donation in an amount of their choosing:

$5 per month provides shoes and school uniforms for one girl. ($60 per year)
$10 provides one week’s transportation to and from home, school, and the Bahia Street Center for one girl. (about $45 per month, or $540 per year)
$25 per month provides school supplies for one girl. ($300 per year)
$175 per month provides everything necessary for one girl. This includes tuition, transportation, nutrition, shoes, uniforms, health care, books, and school supplies. ($2100 per year)
