Compton Hospice Charity Profile

Compton Hospice has been providing the best in palliative care to patients facing a life-limiting illness, and their families, for more than a quarter-of-a-century.

Our purpose is to make a difference to people’s lives when their illness is no longer curable, adding life to years rather than years to life.

We do this by treating the people, not just their conditions, through our in- patient and community care facilities, medical and holistic treatments and support services.

Our philosophy is to support our patients emotionally, psychologically and spiritually, as well as easing their physical symptoms, to help them live fulfilling lives at home for as long as possible.

Although end of life care remains an important part of what we do, we offer so much more and can make real improvements to our patients’ quality of life, and that of their families, so they can make the most of their time together.

Our services are available free-of-charge to a catchment area of 1.3 million people from communities across the Black Country, including Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall, South Staffordshire and East Shropshire.

Compton Hospice Volunteer Information

Volunteers play a vital role in all departments at the hospice saving huge amounts of money each year. The individual personalities and skills that they bring enhance the service adding to the ethos in a very special way.

The diversity of roles vary to encourage any potential volunteer to apply, the opportunities and skill requirements include duties such as gardening, receptionists, patient related areas, driving, fundraising, administration, kitchen, working in any of our shops - both on site and in the community - and promoting the Hospice lottery.

There are opportunities that require specific skills, becoming a trustee, providing contacts in the corporate sector for fundraising and operational expertise.

Time scale can vary from a four hour shift to an hour shaking a can; weekend and evening volunteers are just as vital to the hospice, fitting their volunteer role into a busy work schedule.

The process of application involves completing an information form, an interview and if successful, an invitation to the volunteer induction programme. The induction is aimed to give new recruits an insight into the philosophy of the hospice, an understanding of the service that we provide, ensuring the volunteer feels confident and adequately prepared before beginning their role.

The investment that goes into providing volunteers for the hospice is rewarded both financially and in the enthusiasm, support and commitment they bring. During 2004 there were 627 working in all departments at the hospice, most volunteers work a four hour shift, if they were paid the minimum wage which is currently £4.85 it would have a value of over £630.000 per year, this is a tremendous financial saving.
