Association Of Wheelchair Children Charity Profile

The Association of Wheelchair Children (AWC) grew out of the Newham Rollers - a local activities group for wheelchair-using children, which operated in the East End of London for eight years. As knowledge about the Newham Rollers spread, more and more requests for help for children outside the Newham area were received. As the demand for these specialist wheelchair services grew, AWC was registered by the Charity Commissioners on 22nd June 1990 by Owen McGhee BSc MCSP SRP, at that time Senior Community Paediatric Physiotherapist for The Newham Health Authority.

From 1990 AWC has been able to train wheelchair-using children to become independently mobile both in and out of doors but on a national scale across the whole of the UK. In certain circumstances the charity also provides equipment to help children move about independently and with confidence.

Today AWC works with over 240 wheelchair-using children and their families every year providing child assessments, specialist wheelchair training, ongoing therapy advice and the provision of specialist mobility equipment to wheelchair-using children and young adults. Many of the children the charity works with have needs other than wheelchair mobility. For example, when a child is unable to speak we can provide communication aids, or if they have severe hand function problems we can supply a word processor. We will try to supply any aid, which we believe will make life easier and more comfortable for the wheelchair-using child.

No other voluntary organisation provides a similar nationwide programme of wheelchair assessments and training for wheelchair-using children. We believe that just because some children use wheelchairs, they should not be prevented from living life to the full.
