Action Deafness Charity Profile
Deafness affects approximately one in seven of the British population. Of these people 8.3 million are hard of hearing, 123,000 are deafened, 70,000 are profoundly deaf and approximately 24,000 are deafblind.
Action Deafness offers a range of services to promote independence, equality and opportunity among these communities.
The charity Leicester and County Mission for Deaf People was established in 1897. More commonly known in recent years as the Centre for Deaf People, our working title was changed to Action Deafness in June 2006 in conjunction with the launch of a new brand.
The aim of Action Deafness is not to do things for the deaf community, but to empower them to access services, employment and information themselves. We work towards an inclusive society by offering, among other things, learning, communication and interpreting services as well as advocacy and mentoring.
Action Deafness Volunteer Information
Action Deafness is always looking for volunteers to help with advocacy, fundraising, organising events and working with our different Deaf and hard of hearing groups.
It is useful for volunteers to have BSL skills and some Deaf Awareness to work in Action Deafness, but there are many other opportunities available for those with no prior knowledge of sign language.
This is an opportunity for you to discuss what you want to gain from your volunteering experience and will help us to get to know you better. We will then try our best to find you work that helps Action Deafness and our clients whilst meeting your personal objectives.
