Grimsby's St Andrew's Hospice Volunteer Information
St Andrew's Hospice relies heavily on a wonderful team of volunteers - over 500! This dedicated group of people saves the hospice hundreds of thousands of pounds each year and they support the hospice 365 days a year.
The team work throughout the hospice as well as in the community. They undertake a varied range of tasks bringing to them numerous skills and experience. Just some of the roles include :
The grounds have been developed entirely by a volunteer workforce, who have used begged and borrowed materials to achieve truly glorious gardens throughout the year for patients and visitors to enjoy. The team works tirelessly every Tuesday and always need help with the never-ending maintenance of the grounds.
Most day patients are collected from their homes by volunteer drivers either by car or in our specially adapted minibus, and then returned home after their visit. Training is provided for operation and driving of the minibus.
The heart of the hospice - everyone always comments on the wonderful food!. We couldn't do it without all the helpers who bake cakes, wash up, and peel potatoes. Training in Basic Food Hygiene is provided for all kitchen volunteers.
The hospice doesn't have lots of admin staff so we rely heavily on volunteers. Some of the tasks include: inputting data onto the computer, answering telephones, counting money, general typing, filing, helping with mailings, and just being prepared to turn their hand to what ever is going on at the time.
The hospice has 7 shops, which raise vast amounts of money from goods donated by local people. The shops are in West St Mary's Gate, & Cromwell Road, Grimsby and Pinfold Lane, Scartho, Pelham Road Immingham, St Peters Avenue, Cleethorpes, Newlands Avenue, Hull and Queen Street, Louth. 4 or 5 volunteers are needed to run the shops 6 mornings and 5 afternoons every week. Do you know a good clothes label when you see one?. Know a valuable item from bric a brac?. Experience in using a till? Like sorting through bags of clothes and pricing up, as well as chatting and being helpful to our customers? You could be a great help to us in one of our shops.
We also operate 3 Tea Bars in Hull & Grimsby Magistrates Courts and at the Pilgrim Health Centre in Immingham. We serve light snacks and drinks 5 days each week. If you enjoy meeting people and can prepare snacks and drinks then we would like to hear from you. Training in Basic Food Hygiene is provided for all tea bar volunteers.
PAT Testers for electrical items
We are now selling electrical items in our shops. We need volunteers to PAT test these items before they go on sale. Hours to suit and this can be done either at our store in Peaks Lane or at one of the shops. Full training given. Any queries please call 01472 350908 Ext 264
The never-ending challenge of raising funds means the fundraisers always need help. There are never enough people available to help and we would welcome assistance in any way. We always need help with store collections, offers to run coffee mornings or represent the hospice at events. Would you like to organise an event to raise funds for the hospice? The team is trying to establish "friends" groups throughout Lincolnshire, Hull & East Riding - if you can help in any way please contact the fundraising team.
